I brought in my late father's Seiko 5 — one of those watches that just had to keep running without becoming something different. Ahmad looked at it, told me the dial had some minor yellowing from storage humidity, and then asked whether I wanted it noted or addressed. I said noted. He respected that completely. The movement runs well now and the watch looks exactly as I handed it over, which was the whole point.

The chronograph on my husband's Longines had been stopping mid-measurement for about two years. I contacted Balance Cog and sent a message describing the problem — they came back quickly with a clear description of what was likely causing it and what the service would involve. The work took about four weeks, which they had mentioned upfront. It has been running correctly since. The timing log they provided was a nice touch; you can actually see the difference in the before and after figures.

We engaged Balance Cog for an estate assessment of my uncle's watch collection — nine pieces, mostly from the 1960s and 70s. The inventory they produced was more thorough than I expected. Each watch had its own section with condition grades and a note on what had been done to it previously. They recommended doing nothing with three of the pieces, which I actually appreciated. It would have been easy to upsell work on all nine.

I was worried about sending a watch I'd worn for twenty years to any workshop. The intake process at Balance Cog helped — they photographed everything, and the record they kept meant I knew exactly what condition it was in when it left me. It came back with the crown seal replaced, the movement serviced, and the original surface marks still there. Exactly as agreed.

Turnaround was slightly longer than I was hoping for — about three and a half weeks — but they had warned me it could go to five, so I was not surprised. The chronograph reset issue is gone, and the pusher feel is much better than it was. The closing report was more detailed than I expected from a small workshop. I will come back when the movement needs its next service.

My wife's grandmother left a Tudor from the 1970s. I had no idea what condition it was in internally, and I was nervous about having anyone open it. Ahmad's assessment was calm and direct — he described what he found, what he recommended, and what he would leave alone. The case was hand-cleaned. The movement works. The closing document is in the box with the watch now, which is where it should be.

Case Studies
Three situations, three approaches
Case Study 01 — Conservative Cleaning
A 1968 Omega De Ville, inherited, not worn in thirty years
Situation
The owner had inherited the watch from his father. The movement had stopped; the case had developed a pleasant even patina; the dial showed some age-related change in tone. He wanted it running but was concerned about anyone touching the surfaces.
What We Did
Full movement service with hand cleaning of the case exterior. Dial and hands were not touched. The crown gasket was replaced. A written note was added to the report explicitly confirming that the dial colour change and case patina were left as found and photographed at intake.
Outcome
Movement running at +4 seconds per day (within specification). Case and dial unchanged from intake photographs. Report and photographs handed to the owner with the watch. Bench time: thirteen days.
Case Study 02 — Chronograph Service
A Heuer Carrera with a hesitating seconds hand and a failed reset
Situation
The chronograph seconds hand had begun to stall for a fraction of a second on engagement. The reset also failed to return to zero cleanly. The owner used the watch regularly and was not willing to leave it with an unknown result.
What We Did
The chronograph module was removed and serviced separately. Hammer depth was found to be the primary cause of the stall. Pusher seals were replaced, and register alignment was checked and corrected. The base calibre was cleaned and lubricated independently.
Outcome
Seconds hand engagement smooth from cold start. Reset returns cleanly to zero on all three registers. Timing log showed improvement from +22 s/day to +3 s/day in running position. Workmanship covered for twelve months. Bench time: twenty-six days.
Case Study 03 — Estate Assessment
A collection of eleven watches from a Penang estate
Situation
The executor of an estate needed a written condition record for eleven watches spanning four decades. She was not a collector and needed clear notes, not technical detail. The family intended to keep four pieces and sell the remainder through an auction house.
What We Did
Each watch was assessed individually. Three were recommended for servicing only; four were noted as requiring attention before they could run; four were described as better left unserviced for auction. Staged work was agreed on the seven pieces remaining with the family, one at a time.
Outcome
A complete inventory with condition grades and individual notes per piece was produced within six weeks of intake. Subsequent bench work on the seven family pieces ran across four months. The closing dossier was formatted for handover to the auction house's specialist. Programme duration: seven months total.
