Services
Three services, each with a defined scope and a plain price
Conservative cleaning for pieces that need to stay as they are. Chronograph servicing for mechanisms that have lost precision. Estate assessment for collections that need careful individual handling.
Back to HomeOur Methodology
How we approach every piece, regardless of service type
Every watch that comes to Balance Cog follows the same intake sequence: a written condition record, photographs of the surfaces, and a rate measurement before anything else happens. This establishes a baseline. The assessment that follows is based on actual findings, not assumptions about what the watch probably needs.
The scope of work is discussed and agreed before bench work begins. If something additional is found during the service, it is reported and discussed. Work outside the agreed scope does not proceed without a separate conversation. This is not a bureaucratic constraint — it is how a relationship between a watchmaker and an owner of something valuable should work.
The closing report for each service includes rate measurements before and after, notes on what was done, and — where relevant — a record of what was deliberately left alone. For estate work, each piece receives its own notes, and the programme closes with a structured dossier.
The default at every stage is conservative. The question is not what can be done to a watch, but what it actually needs. A movement that runs within an acceptable rate after cleaning may not need adjustment. A case that carries forty years of marks may not need polishing. We say so when that is the case.
Service 01
Conservative Cleaning & Light Servicing
A minimal-intervention service for pieces where originality is the point. Dial and hands untouched, case cleaned by hand rather than machine, movement cleaned and lubricated, and the patina left exactly as it arrived. Written for owners of inherited or reference-condition watches who want the piece running without losing its history.
- Dial and hands untouched — no chemical cleaning of dial surface
- Case cleaned by hand, not ultrasonic or tumbling
- Movement cleaned and lubricated according to manufacturer intervals
- Fresh crown gasket fitted
- Rate log before and after service
- Photographs of untouched surfaces for the owner's records
- Written record of what was deliberately left alone
Bench Time
Approximately two weeks

Service 02
Chronograph Function & Pusher Service
Servicing of column-wheel and cam-actuated chronograph mechanisms, covering pusher feel, reset alignment, hammer depth and clutch engagement. Suited to owners whose seconds hand hesitates on start or fails to return to zero. The chronograph module is disassembled separately from the base calibre.
- Chronograph module disassembled separately from base calibre
- Pusher seals and springs replaced
- All three registers aligned
- Hammer depth and clutch engagement verified
- Timing log with chronograph both engaged and disengaged
- Twelve months workmanship coverage on labour performed
Bench Time
Three to five weeks depending on parts

Service 03
Estate Timepiece Assessment & Staged Restoration
A structured programme for families settling a collection of older watches, taking each piece through assessment, conservation and, only where sensible, restoration. Written for households and executors who need clear condition records without being pushed into work they may not want. Any piece can be withdrawn from the programme at any point.
- Initial written inventory with condition grades per piece
- Individual conservation notes for each watch
- Staged bench work agreed one watch at a time
- Storage in monitored cabinet between stages
- Withdrawal at any point, no penalty
- Closing dossier suitable for any future custodian
Programme Duration
Five to nine months

Shared Standards
Protocols common to every service
Photographic intake record
All surfaces photographed before any work. Images form part of the service record and are provided to the owner.
Rate measurement before and after
Timekeeping is measured at intake and again after service. Both figures are included in the closing report.
Original parts returned
Components replaced during service are packaged and returned with the watch. Not discarded without the owner's knowledge.
Secure storage at the workshop
Watches are held in a monitored cabinet with restricted access. Not left unsecured on the bench between working sessions.
Written closing report
Every service closes with a written report covering what was done, what was measured, and — where relevant — what was deliberately left alone.
Communication throughout
Additional findings are reported and discussed before any extra work proceeds. No surprises on the invoice.
